I had the BEST DAY the Saturday before my birthday! First, it started with a 3-hour spa session that included a massage, exfoliation, and facial. Gary dropped me off at Spa Esoteric, which was voted the best spa in McKinney. It in historic downtown McKinney in a little house, so it’s not very big or fancy. Think more B&B style. It was so all really, really wonderful. And my face was so smooth and shiny afterwards!
Then Gary picked me up and we went to get manicures and pedicures. Well I did. Gary just got a much-needed pedicure. We were supposed to go see a movie after that, but ended up not having quite enough time so I had the idea to go check out Thai rolled ice cream. I really wanted to see what all the hype was about but hadn’t had a chance to do it yet. We found a place in Willowbend Mall called 10 degrees Fahrenheit and headed that way. Y’all. It was SO GOOD! Totally lived up to the hype! They let you choose a base (vanilla or chocolate) and then two fruits. I chose strawberry and mango with vanilla ice cream, and Gary got strawberry and kiwi with chocolate ice cream. So first they chop up the fruit into tiny tiny tiny pieces, and then they pour the cream over it. It’s all done on this frozen metal slab so when they pour the cream it starts freezing. They mix the fruit and ice cream up super well, chopping and mixing, etc., and then they spread the mixture out, let it freeze, and then scrape it into rolls. They mix it up so well that the fruit flavors get infused into the ice cream – and it is divine. So so yummy! Definitely try it if you get the chance!
After we had ice cream, we headed to the “show” that Gary told me we were seeing that night. He said it was a show that was only in for one night, and that I wasn’t allowed to google it. We drove to the Heard Museum, and when I asked what we were doing there Gary told me they have an event center. At this point I was a little concerned that this show was going to be some weird, lame little show where everyone sits around feeling awkward. We actually ended up following the Buca di Beppo catering truck into the parking lot, which made Gary really nervous because that was who was catering the party, and they were 45 minutes early.
Anyways, we got out of the car, and I noticed that there weren’t very many cars parked, which added to my concern that this was going to be a bust. We walked down a ramp and approached a propped open door that said “staff only.” I commented that the door said “staff only” and thought it was weird that the entrance to an event center would say that. At that point Gary started walking faster. I remember recognizing someone’s voice from inside, but I didn’t have time to think about who it was because by that point Gary had opened the door, and we were walking inside to everyone yelling, “SURPRISE!” I was SO surprised, almost to the point of tears.
We ate dinner from Bucca di Beppo since it was delivered early, and then we had cake from The Cake Stand in downtown McKinney. They make the best cakes!!
Gary also planned some really fun games. The first game was a newlywed type game, but it was all about me. The contestants were my parents, Gary, my little sister, my oldest friend, and my newest friend. A friend of ours had come up with questions, and we had white boards to write the answers on.
One of my favorite parts of the game was when this question was asked: What was my favorite boy band growing up – Hanson, N-Sync, or Backstreet Boys. My mom answered “in sink.” LOL my poor parents, they really had no idea what was going on.
After the game was over, we played mafia! The room was perfect because when we turned out all the lights it was pitch black – couldn’t see a thing! It was SO SO FUN! We hardly ever get to play mafia anymore because there isn’t a space big enough or dark enough.
It really was one of the best nights ever. It’s so rare to get so many of your favorite people from different parts of your life together in the same room. It was the combination of a few of my very favorite things – friends, cake, and games. Gary couldn’t have planned it any more perfectly!
